The Chiefs selected a former Texas Tech quarterback in the 2017 draft, and they plan to play him in the final week of the season.
Patrick Mahomes will make his first NFL start for the Chiefs, who have clinched the AFC West. Mahomes was the No. 10 pick in the draft, and the Chiefs gave up their 2017 first- and third-round selections and a 2018 first-round pick in a trade with the Bills to move up 17 spots and select him — ahead of promising Texans rookie Deshaun Watson.
Chiefs coach Andy Reid told reporters that Mahomes will get first-team reps during practice this week, while normal starter Alex Smith runs the scout team and gets a weekend off. The Chiefs are locked into the No. 4 seed in the AFC, and Smith will miss the game against the Broncos, who have one of the best defenses in the league.
Smith has one year left on his contract, but Mahomes looked like a future star during training camp. He has not thrown a pass in the regular season, but went 34-for-54 for 390 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions during the preseason. Smith, meanwhile, has played at first tremendously, then poorly and recently adequately this season, throwing three touchdowns with an interception and 803 yards in the Chiefs’ last three games.
The Giants also selected a former Texas Tech quarterback in the same draft. Davis Webb was at Texas Tech with Mahomes before transferring to California for his final season. He went in the third round to the Giants, who have yet to let him take a snap despite being 2-13 and out of the playoff hunt for half the season.
Webb is expected to be active this week as the No. 2 quarterback behind Eli Manning, according to NFL.com, so it is possible that he will make his NFL debut at some point.
