The Giants will not go against safety Bob Sanders Sunday night when they face the Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium in a game dubbed Manning Bowl II.
Sanders didn’t make it out of the second defensive series in the season-opening 34-24 loss to the Texans. Sanders had to leave the field with a right arm injury that today has been diagnosed as a torn biceps tendon. That’s a debilitating injury that will keep the injury-prone Sanders out for quite a while.
There’s no doubt Sanders is an impact player and one of the top safeties in the NFL but he cannot stay on the field. His replacement, Melvin Bullitt, has started 21 games for Sanders the past two years and figures to do so again against the Giants.
Sanders is excellent at coming up in run support and without him for most of the season opener the Colts were anemic in stopping the run, giving up 257 rushing yards – 231 to Arian Foster, the most-ever against the Colts.
