Washington Commanders rookie running back Brian Robinson was shot multiple times during an attempted robbery Sunday, the team announced.

The rookie was hospitalized and in stable condition after being a victim of what is believed to be either an attempted carjacking or an armed robbery. According to NFL Network, at least two bullets struck Robinson in the lower body. His injuries are considered non-life threatening.

The incident occurred just before 6 p.m. ET in Washington, Metro Police Department spokesperson Dustin Sternbeck told ESPN. Police arrived to a wounded Robinson suffering from “a couple gunshot wounds to his lower extremities,” Sternbeck said, before Robinson was rushed to a local hospital.

Two potential suspects have been identified, according to Sternbeck, as an investigation remains ongoing.

“We have been made aware that Brian Robinson Jr. was the victim of an attempted armed robbery or carjacking in Washington, D.C.,” The Commanders said in a statement. “He sustained non-life-threatening injuries and is currently being treated at the hospital, where Team officials are on-site with him. We ask that you please respect Brian’s privacy at this time.”

Alabama’s football account on Twitter quote-tweeted the Commanders’ statement with a prayer emoji.

A star at Alabama, the 23-year-old Robinson was selected by Washington in the third round of this year’s draft and he had been expected to share the backfield with Antonio Gibson and J.D. McKissic this season.

In a breakout senior season, Robinson rushed for 1,343 yards and recorded 16 total touchdowns for the Crimson Tide.

“I just got done visiting w/ Brian,” Commanders head coach Ron Rivera tweeted Sunday night. “He is in good spirits and wanted me to thank everyone for their kind words, prayers & support. He wants his teammates to know he appreciates them all for reaching out and he loves them all & will be back soon doing what he does best.”
