It has not been a season ripe with success or luck for Commanders’ quarterback Carson Wentz.

Washington revealed in a statement Monday evening that Wentz suffered a fractured finger on his throwing hand during the team’s 12-7 road win against the Chicago Bears.

He had successful surgery on the finger, and will immediately begin rehabbing and is expect to make a full recovery.

The news comes exactly a week since Washington head coach Ron Rivera identified the “quarterback” as the reason his squad has struggled this season.

Even in the win over the Bears, the 29-year-old Wentz only completed 12 of 22 passes for 99 total yards. He did not record a touchdown in the game, and has struggled to be consistent for much of his first season in Washington.

With Wentz potentially out for significant time, Washington will likely turn to backup quarterback Taylor Heinicke, who has thrown 22 career touchdowns in 24 career appearances.
