Ron Rivera is taking matters into his own hands.

The Commanders fired defensive coordinator Jan Del Rio and defensive backs coach Brent Vieselmeyer on Friday, one day after Washington’s 45-10 blowout loss to the Cowboys on Thanksgiving, the head coach announced in a statement.

“We’re going to be moving forward and do things a little differently,” Rivera said during a video conference call on Friday. “It was very tough, difficult decisions because those are two really good men, good football coaches, guys who’ve had a lot of success in this league. It’s just unfortunate, the situation (and) circumstances, but (I) did feel that change was something we needed to do going forward and really to see if we can shake some things up and get some things started.”

The move comes as rumors about Rivera’s job security swirl amid a three-game losing streak that’s seen the Commanders outscored 85-30 and fall to 4-8.

Washington has allowed a league-high 43 receptions of 20-plus yards entering Week 12 and ranks dead-last in points allowed per game (29.2).

“I’ve told you before I’m not worried about anything,” the embattled coach said after Thursday’s loss. “All I’m going to do is do my job and see how things go. That’s the only thing I can do.”

Rivera will take over the defensive play-calling — something he last did with Carolina in 2019 — and he’ll have a tall task in Week 13 when Washington hosts the second-highest scoring offense in the Dolphins

The Commanders dealt away star pass rushers Chase Young and Montez Sweat at the trade deadline, and Del Rio’s dismissal is the latest change to hit the franchise.

For first-year owner Josh Harris, Friday’s dismissals are a step in the right direction.

“I feel exactly how our fans feel today: disappointed and frustrated,” he said in a statement. “It’s how our players and staff feel as well. I knew our first season of ownership would include challenges along the way, and we will not shy away from hard work, nor will we be deterred by adversity.

“As Coach Rivera and I discussed, all of our energy for the remainder of the season will be focused on playing better, more consistent football and developing our players while intently evaluating the areas in which we need to improve this offseason. Our fans deserve a team that can compete with the NFL’s best and win sustainably over the long-term. I will not waver from that mission.”

Commanders players, like their head coach, have tried to avoid the growing noise around the team.

“It’s only when you guys ask,” left tackle Charles Leno Jr. said, according to ESPN. “No one else is bringing this s–t up. We don’t talk about this s–t; we don’t care about this stuff, we’re listening to our coaches following game plan and trying to win games.”
