Ron Rivera isn’t ready to name his Week 17 starter just yet.
“We’re gonna evaluate the tape, we’ll talk about those things and I’ll make a decision next week,” Rivera said after Saturday’s 37-20 loss to the 49ers, in which Taylor Heinicke was benched for Carson Wentz. “And I’ll make it early, too, because whoever’s gonna start is gonna get the chance to make it work.”
Wentz was put into the game after Heinicke fumbled and threw an interception on consecutive drives in the fourth quarter, helping the 49ers to extend their lead to 30-14.
Heinicke was the backup at the start of the season, but played well enough to keep the job after Wentz went on injured reserve in October.
On Saturday, Wentz led a touchdown drive upon being inserted into the game, finishing 12-for-16 with 123 yards.

And not that I wanted to … just throw Carson in there, but at the same time it was an opportunity to see where Carson was and he did a nice job. I thought he had pretty good command of what we were doing, he stood tall in the pocket, made a couple of quick decisions, got the ball out quickly a couple of times, and he threw some good balls.”
Rivera also complimented Heinicke, who threw for 166 yards, two touchdowns in an interception before coming out of the game in the fourth quarter.
“I thought he played pretty good. A lot of those things that happened were not necessarily his fault,” Rivera said. “The turnovers, to pin them all on him would be really tough. I’d like to think that those weren’t his issues, there are some things we could have done better.”
A look at the Commanders’ playoff chances after Saturday’s games. NY Post illustrationThe Commanders, who are 7-7-1 and in fourth place in the NFC East after Saturday, still control their own playoff destiny as the No. 7 seed. If they win their last two games — they face the Browns and Cowboys in Weeks 17 and 18 — they’re in. But one loss could allow the 7-8 Seahawks or Lions to jump them.
