Coughlin cashes in
BY PAUL SCHWARTZ
What went from unlikely to likely to a certainty will become official tomorrow, when the Giants announce a new four-year contract for Tom Coughlin that will secure his services through the 2011 season.
While an agreement was reached today, the framework for a four-year, $21 million deal has been in place for several weeks. Coughlin was set to make $3.5 million in 2008, the final year of his contract, but that deal was ripped up and in its place was a new and more lucrative contract. Coughlin now vaults into the upper tier of NFL head coaches in terms of salary.
Coughlin’s remarkable turnaround â he was given a mere one-year extension following last season’s 8-8 record â culminated in the Giants stunning playoff run and eventual 17-14 upset victory over the Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.
