Even after they utterly collapsed without him on the field, it appears the Dallas Cowboys are still having the same issues when it comes to signing QB Dak Prescott to a long-term deal.
Prescott’s stalemate with the Cowboys over his contract was a major storyline of the past NFL offseason, with the team ultimately placing the franchise tag on him when they couldn’t reach a long-term agreement. The star quarterback was proving himself worth the money before suffering a season-ending ankle fracture, leading the league in passing yards at the time of the gruesome injury.
Dallas has collapsed to a 3-9 record with a revolving door of Andy Dalton, Garrett Gilbert and Ben DiNucci at QB in Prescott’s absence, so one would think they’d be rushing to meet his contract demands. But it appears not much has changed.
“Our issues in our negotiations with Dak have been that we’re wanting to be more committed, in terms of the [number of years],” Cowboys VP Stephen Jones said on 105.3 The Fan. “We’re not nervous to sign Dak. His makeup is all the right things. He’s a great leader. He’s a great player.”

Neither side would budge, and Prescott ended up becoming just the third QB since 1993 to play on the franchise tag. Neither of the other two, Drew Brees (with the Chargers) and Kirk Cousins (with Washington), ended up signing long-term deals with that team.
The Cowboys have never wavered in their desire to make Prescott their long-term franchise QB, but they are also likely to pick in the top five of the 2021 NFL Draft, so it’s possible they opt to draft a QB instead and start over at the position. Either way, it’s going to be an interesting offseason in Big D.
