The Dallas Cowboys released veteran cornerback Trevon Diggs, ESPN announced Tuesday afternoon.

The 27-year-old defensive back inked his name on a five-year, $97 million contract extension — including $33 million guaranteed — with the Cowboys in 2023, following back-to-back Pro Bowl seasons with 14 total interceptions.

But Diggs, hampered by injuries, had played just 19 of 47 possible games since signing his extension.

His release came within hours of his brother, Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs, getting charged with “felony strangulation or suffocation and misdemeanor assault and battery charges” from an alleged Dec. 2 incident.

Any team that claims Trevon off waivers “would be on the hook for $470,000 he is due in base salary for Week 18, plus $58,823 if he is active this week,” according to ESPN.

It seems more likely that Trevon goes unclaimed on waivers and hits the market as a free agent, as he has no guaranteed money remaining on his deal beyond this season.

The former Alabama standout tore his ACL during practice in Week 3 of the 2023 season, then played just 11 games in 2024 before getting shut down to undergo surgery on his left knee.

Trevon “upset the [Cowboys] organization” this offseason by performing most of his rehab work in South Florida, rather than with the Dallas training staff, according to ESPN.

The cornerback retorted that he felt “more comfortable” ramping up with Dr. Sharif Tabbah at Alkeme Sports Rx.

For neglecting to participate in at least 84% of the team’s voluntary offseason program, the Cowboys enforced a $500,000 de-escalator clause in Trevon’s contract, which reduced his 2025 salary to $8.5 million.

He was once again limited, appearing in just eight games this season after spending time on the IR due to a concussion from an at-home incident — which he later said was the result of a mounted TV falling on his head

Even when healthy, Trevon’s recent play had become a cause for concern.

His interception numbers fell off a cliff, and according to NFL Researcher, the former superstar corner allowed a near perfect passer rating to opposing quarterbacks this season.

The status of Stefon, the four-time Pro Bowl receiver in his first year with the Patriots, is unclear.
