The Eagles are 5-0, the only undefeated team remaining in the NFL.

Cooper Rush is 4-0 as the Cowboys’ starting quarterback since taking over for the injured Dak Prescott.

Something will have to give when the two NFC East rivals face each other Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field.

As impressive as Rush has been in place of Prescott, who’s getting closer to playing as his injured right thumb has healed, has been what Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts has done.

Hurts, who has not been taken seriously as a big-time NFL quarterback, is perhaps the leading candidate as the league MVP through the first five weeks of the season.

His 266 rushing yards are second among quarterbacks. His six rushing touchdowns are the second most in the NFL. Hurts’ legs are something we all knew set him apart.

But it’s his passing that has opened eyes this season. He ranks fifth in completion percentage rate at 67.9 percent, up from his career average of 60.9 percent. And he’s second in yards per pass play at 8.5, which dispels any notion that he’s dinking and dunking.

“I don’t think we’ve seen Jalen’s ceiling,’’ Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni told reporters. “I know we haven’t seen Jalen’s ceiling. I just think you’ve seen tremendous progression from him because he works at it and he loves it.”

Hurts, this past offseason, attacked some of his weaknesses, working on his throwing mechanics. He spent about two months in Southern California this offseason with throwing experts, focusing on his footwork and release, Sirianni revealed to ESPN during the summer.

“I’m noticing a big difference,” Sirianni said. “What I see is a crisper ball. The accuracy I’ve been very pleased with. You can just see him taking strides every single day with his accuracy because of the fundamentals he has with his feet and his upper body.”

As for the Cowboys’ quarterback situation, as of Friday, Dallas head coach Mike McCarthy left the door open for Prescott to return, listing him as questionable on the injury report.
Prescott missed the past four games recovering from surgery to fix a fractured right thumb. He threw on the side on Wednesday and was listed as a limited participant in practice Thursday, but did not take any team snaps.

On Wednesday, McCarthy said the Cowboys are preparing as if Rush will make his fifth consecutive start. As of Friday, Prescott had not thrown in practice. At best, it seems perhaps Prescott could dress for the game as a backup.

Though Rush has not been lighting it up statistically, he hasn’t committed a turnover in his four starts. The Eagles are a league-best plus-nine in turnover margin.

Cowboys receiver CeeDee Lamb was added to the injury report on Friday with a hip ailment and was also listed as questionable. It’s believed he’ll play Sunday.

The Cowboys have dominated the Eagles for the better part of the past two years. Dallas is on a current eight-game winning streak in the NFC East, which includes two wins over the Eagles last season — 41-21 and 51-26.

Dallas will enter the game on a strong run — literally. The Cowboys rushed for 164 yards between Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard last week.

Believe it or not, the most important player may end up being Dallas kicker Brett Maher. The Cowboys are not very good at scoring touchdowns, so they need their kicker to pay off some of their drives with three points. Maher has done exactly that.

Maher has been a weapon, especially from long distance. He’s 4-of-5 on field goals of 50 yards or more, tied for most in the NFL. He has the second-most attempts this season and is second in points scored at 45.

The Dallas defense, too, has been strong. No team has scored more than 19 points on the Cowboys this season and they are allowing an average of 14.4 points per game, third best in the league. The Eagles, meanwhile, are averaging 27 points per game, the fifth most in the league.

It all adds up to the Game of the Week, must-watch TV.
