With a number of big-name head coaches available, the Cowboys are sticking with what they have.

Dallas will keep Mike McCarthy as its coach for the 2024 season, owner Jerry Jones said in a statement Wednesday night.

“I believe this team is very close and capable of achieving our ultimate goals and the best step forward for us will be with Mike McCarthy as our head coach,” Jones said. “There is great benefit to continuing the team’s progress under Mike’s leadership as our head coach.

“Specifically, there are many layers of success that have occurred this season as a result of Mike’s approach to leading the team, both with individual players and with our team collectively.”

The Cowboys finished the regular season with a 12-5 record and an NFC East title, but they fell in a disappointing 48-32 home loss to the Packers in the wild-card round on Sunday.

After the game, Jones expressed his frustration with the seemingly vexing loss, which led to some speculation that the team could move on from McCarthy.

“I don’t want to rank it,” Jones said outside the Dallas locker room. “But I will tell you this was beyond my comprehension.”

But on Wednesday, Jones held himself “accountable” and said the loss is “shared by everyone here, not just Coach McCarthy.”

McCarthy, 60, went 6-10 in his first year (2020) in Dallas but has since produced three straight 12-win teams.

However, postseason success has not followed as the team has not gotten past the divisional round and put up a 1-3 playoff record under his leadership.

After McCarthy took over play-calling duties this year, Dallas finished with the most points per game (29.9) in the NFL during the regular season, along with the fifth-most yards per game (371.6.).

Quarterback Dak Prescott flourished, finishing the season with a league-leading 36 touchdown passes and a career-high 69.5 completion percentage.

But Prescott threw two interceptions in the loss to the Packers, including a back-breaking pick-six in the second quarter that put Dallas down 27-0.

McCarthy, who won Super Bowl 45 with the Packers, has a 167-102 record between his Green Bay and Dallas stints as he heads into the final year of his contract.
