Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo is not the reason Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady decided to un-retire — contrary to rampant speculation.

On March 12 — just one day before Brady announced his return to Tampa for a 23rd NFL season – Ronaldo spoke with Brady while on the pitch at Old Trafford in the UK, following a Manchester United victory over Tottenham.

At the time, people on Twitter ran with theories that Ronaldo had convinced Brady to come out of retirement, with one person tweeting that the quarterback’s decision was fueled by the “Cristiano effect.”

In an interview with Piers Morgan that aired Thursday, Ronaldo was asked about the timing of the exchange, and said that their conversation was not linked to Brady’s decision to un-retire.

“Psychology, see. I’m a good psychologist,” Ronaldo joked. “I think he had taken the decision a few weeks before that. He’s a very smart guy who knows a lot about football [soccer], we had a nice conversation. I don’t think that had anything to do with it, though.”

In a viral clip taken on the pitch, Ronaldo can be heard asking Brady, “You’re finished [playing] right?”

It’s unclear what Brady said, as his response is inaudible in the video. The seven-time Super Bowl winner can be seen squinting and smiling with his hands in his pockets.

On March 13, the day Brady announced his return for a 23rd season, Ronaldo took to Instagram to share a photo of the pair at Old Trafford.

“Always a pleasure and a privilege to share some thoughts and ideas with another GOAT…👏🏽👊🏽 ,” Ronaldo wrote in his caption.

In September, Page Six reported that Brady’s decision to end his 40-day retirement is what led to the start of marital issues with his ex-wife Gisele Bündchen. The pair confirmed in separate social media posts last month that they finalized their divorce.

Brady and Bündchen — who share son Benjamin, 12, daughter Vivian, 9, as well as son Jack, 15, from Brady’s previous relationship with Bridget Moynahan — had been living separately leading up to the split.

On Saturday, the supermodel, 42, sparked romance rumors when she was photographed in Costa Rica with Joaquim Valente, a Miami-based jiujitsu instructor. Valente trains Bündchen and her kids, and the two starred in a recent photoshoot together for “Dust” magazine.

Although Brady and Bündchen have yet to address the matter, TMZ reported that Brady’s camp is questioning why Valente joined his ex-wife on vacation with their kids. A separate source connected to Bündchen told the outlet that she is not dating Valente.

Meanwhile, Brady has maintained that he is focused on family and winning football games.
