Based on his resume, Aaron Curry seemed to have a leg up on gaining a Giants roster spot, considering the need the team has for linebackers and the fact they had a very high grade on Curry when he was entering the NFL Draft. It didn’t work out that way.
The Giants, in advance of tomorrow’s roster cut-down deadline, cut 14 players yesterday, the most notable being Curry. They also made a transaction they hoped they wouldn’t have to make, putting safety Stevie Brown on season-ending injured reserve with a torn left ACL. That trims the roster from 90 to 75.
In addition to Curry, the players released were: fullback Ben Guidugli; wide receivers Brandon Collins (who faces a four-game NFL suspensionat the beginning of the season) and Terrence Sinkfield; tight ends Jamie Childers and Chase Clement; offensive linemen Michael Jasper and Austin Holtz; linebackers Jake Muasau and Etienne Sabino; defensive tackle Frank Okam; and defensive backs Laron Scott, Junior Mertile and Alonzo Tweedy.
None of the cuts came as a surprise. Even though Curry was the No. 4 overall pick by the Seahawks in the 2009 NFL Draft, but his attempt to resuscitate his NFL career did not materialize this summer. Curry stayed healthy, but was not productive and was on the field for only 12 snaps against the Jets on Saturday night, overtaken on the depth chart by another newcomer, Kyle Bosworth, as the second-team strong-side linebacker.
Bosworth, a special teams ace, helped his case in his 31 plays against the Jets.
“I made some plays, left some plays out there as well,’’ said Bosworth, who spent the previous three seasons with the Jaguars. “Overall I think I made some really good plays, had a good solid showing.’’
Curry seemed to take the news in stride. He tweeted: “When God reveals things and makes it known BELIEVE him. My time here has been awesome.’’ He also tweeted: “Giants fans have been awesome. Y’all cool wit me. Much respect for the franchise.’’
* Cornerback Jayron Hosley was forced out of the game with a sprained ankle that looked serious, but coach Tom Coughlin said it is not. Coughlin said the injury will not prevent Hosley from working.
* Coughlin said he liked what he saw from Terrell Thomas, who played 23 snaps in his first game in two years.
“We know he’s a football player.We’ve had a couple of serious injuries here and we have to make sure he is back as close to 100 percent as he can be, mentally and physically … and if that’s the case, we know we have an outstanding player,” Coughlin said. “There’s no mystery to this.’’
* Coughlin praised rookie running back Michael Cox for his work on kickoff returns. … Cornerback Corey Webster is expected to return to practice today. He has been out with hamstring and groin soreness.
