As more specifics emerge, Dak Prescott’s new four-year, $160 million contract with the Dallas Cowboys is even more staggering than first believed.
With a $66 million signing bonus paid entirely up front – the largest in NFL history – and a base salary of $9 million in 2021, the 27-year-old quarterback will receive $75 million in the first year. That also would be a record one-year payout, according to Pro Football Talk.
Prescott’s 2022 salary of $20 million is also fully guaranteed, boosting his guaranteed money at signing to a record $95 million. The Cowboys also are obligated to lock in Prescott’s 2023 salary ($31 million) by the fifth day of the 2022 league year, PFT reported, meaning they essentially would have to cut him after one season to avoid his guaranteed money increasing to $126 million.
If he earns the full $160 million over four years, Prescott will make more over that span than Patrick Mahomes, who inked a 10-year extension worth up to $503 million with the Chiefs in July.
Prescott appeared in just five games last season; he underwent surgery to repair a compound fracture and dislocation of his right ankle suffered in Week 5 against the Giants. He had started all 16 games in each of his first four NFL seasons, however, making Pro Bowl appearances in 2016 and 2018.

He played last season under the franchise tag of $31.4 million.
