MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — In a season that featured plenty of debate about replay, there was a debatable replay call in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl 2020.
Chiefs running back Damien Williams caught a short pass from quarterback Patrick Mahomes on third-and-goal from the 49ers’ 5-yard line. He ran toward the pylon and stuck the ball out toward the goal line as he ran out of bounds. The officials on the field called it a touchdown.
It was automatically reviewed since it was a scoring play and replays were inconclusive, so the ruling on the field of a touchdown stood, giving the Chiefs a 24-20 lead after the extra point with 2:44 left in the game.
Had the touchdown been overturned or the officials ruled Williams ran out of bounds initially, the Chiefs would have faced a fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line down three points. It would have been a huge decision for Chiefs coach Andy Reid whether to kick a field goal to tie the game or go for it.
“After review, there was no clear and obvious visual evidence to overturn the ruling on the field of touchdown,” NFL senior vice president of officiating Al Riveron said on Twitter.
Williams was confident he had cleared the goal line.
“I knew it was a TD,” Williams said. “They’ve got to do their job. They have to check it. They checked it, two hands up baby, touchdown.”
