Daniel Jones won’t play Sunday and it’s suddenly unclear if he will play again this season.
Head coach Brian Daboll ruled out Jones (neck) playing against the Jets before Friday’s practice, which was different from last week when Jones was listed as questionable on the final injury report and remained a possibility to play until his post-practice doctor’s appointment.
Jones, who is missing a third straight start, still has not been medically cleared for contact from his second neck injury in the last three seasons.
The change of procedure raised the issue of whether Jones still is in line to return this season — as Daboll said was the case on Oct. 18.
“I don’t have a crystal ball with injuries,” Daboll said, “but he is getting better, and we’ll see where he is next week.”
Sound the alarms?

“All I’ll tell you is I meet with the trainers and the doctors,” Daboll said, “and what they tell me he can do, that’s what we do.”
Jones was not available to the media Friday at his locker to clarify if his season is in jeopardy, according to a Giants spokesperson.
He previously said it was a different type of injury than 2021.
It had seemed like Jones was making progress, as he added scout-team duties to his throwing workload in practice last week.
Daboll said Jones is “getting better” seven times during the course of Friday’s seven-minute interview.
Now, however, the rehab process is starting to mirror the 2021 season, when Jones was a limited practice participant who did not play in the first three games after his neck strain and then was shut down for the additional final three games of a lost season.
“I’m not going to give you an answer that I don’t have right now,” Daboll said.
Perhaps Daboll was being intentionally opaque about injuries.
Or he was course-correcting his initial overly optimistic forecast.
Or he was just determined to stick to a stock answer regardless of the question.
Or there was a setback that he declined to reveal.
“I never expect anything with injuries,” he said.
Daniel Jones may not play again this season. Charles Wenzelberg / New York PostExcept that both Daboll and Jones — who initially said he did not think it was a long-term issue — created an expectation that he would return at some point.
There are nine games and a bye week remaining after Sunday, and there could come a point when it doesn’t make any sense for Jones to return if the playoffs are out of reach.
“He’s done a good job here with the things that he can do out here on the practice field,” Daboll said. “Take it one day at a time, but he’s getting closer.”
So, the Giants (2-5) will ask journeyman Tyrod Taylor, who is signed to a two-year, $11 million contract, to salvage their season instead of their $160 million franchise quarterback.
Daboll has been adamant that Jones will start over Taylor when he returns, but there is no timetable for that decision to even come into play.
A game billed as Jones against Aaron Rodgers when the schedule was released in May will be a battle of backup quarterbacks, with Zach Wilson in for the Jets.
Taylor threw two touchdown passes in the Giants’ 14-7 win against the Commanders last week and has not committed a turnover in his two starts.
“He studies, approaches the game the right way, has good leadership about him,” Daboll said. “He has gotten the ball out, giving our guys a chance to make plays on the ball. He’s done a nice job.”
