Pat Shurmur’s definition of “fast healer” is coming into focus.
Rookie quarterback Daniel Jones, who has been described that way by Shurmur multiple times in recent weeks, is trending toward starting Sunday for the Giants against the Redskins. He missed the last two games with a high ankle sprain, after playing through the pain in the second half against the Packers on Dec. 1.
Jones took quarterback-center exchanges from starter Jon Halapio during the portion of practice open to media. Wednesday practice participation typically is a strong indication of game availability, though it is possible Jones could suffer a setback.
If Jones is healthy, Eli Manning will revert to his role as the top backup and third-stringer Alex Tanney will be inactive. Manning received an emotional send-off from Giants fans last Sunday, which would have been premature if he plays against the Redskins or at home against the Eagles in Week 17.
A high ankle sprain kept Saquon Barkley out for three games, but Shurmur consistently has said Jones’ injury is comparatively less severe.

MurrayWith Shurmur coaching to keep his job, he wants his best quarterback on the field – and it was clear who he feels that is when he benched Manning for Jones after an 0-2 start. Jones’ development under Shurmur also is the main selling point for the Giants (3-11) maintaining continuity.
Jones was running full-speed wind sprints late last week, appeared to feel strong in pregame warmups Sunday and has been seen pushing off to change direction while running in practice. He is itching to get back in and break his personal eight-game losing streak.
Sterling Shepard was at practice, one day after wife Chanel Iman gave birth to the couple’s second child. Antoine Bethea and Nate Solder were not due to excused personal reasons.
