David Montgomery was just trying to say something nice about Chicago. He ended up sending his fans into a city-wide panic.
The Bears running back logged onto Twitter on Wednesday afternoon with some nice words to say about his city – which were then wildly misconstrued and taken out of context.
“Playing in Chicago has been fun and I met some great people along the way!” Montgomery wrote in a since-deleted tweet.
In an offseason full of trade rumors and speculation about player movement – some of which have involved the Bears – fans saw the tweet and immediately assumed Montgomery, 23, was getting traded.
The Iowa State product, who was the NFL’s sixth-leading rusher in 2020, immediately went back to Twitter to clear the air.
“Y’all took that completely wrong! It was not intended in the purpose of football! HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH BALL! I love Chicago and I’m ready to be here for a long time and win a lot of games,” Montgomery wrote, with a facepalm emoji.
Montgomery is coming off an excellent season with the Bears, especially the back half. Over his last six games, he ran for 598 yards and seven touchdowns, adding 24 catches and 226 yards through the air.
