Rookie left tackle Mekhi Becton’s status for this week’s game will be determined in the next few days, if he can practice. Becton is dealing with a capsule injury in his left shoulder that caused him to exit the Week 3 loss to the Colts early and abort an attempt at playing last Thursday against the Broncos.
Becton missing time is a reminder of how special D’Brickashaw Ferguson was for the Jets. This is not a knock on Becton. He is a normal NFL player, a job that has injuries in the description. Ferguson was a freak.
The Jets left tackle from 2006-15 never missed a snap due to injury. Ferguson did not just play every game, he played every snap. Think about that. He played 10,351 snaps, missing just one when Eric Mangini took him out to run a desperation trick play at the end of a game in 2008.
Ferguson played in 167 straight games for the Jets, a remarkable Iron Man streak. He never even appeared on an injury report. That is insane. Players are required to be on the injury report if they receive any treatment from the trainer. That means Ferguson never had a sprained ankle or a sore shoulder, never injured a finger or got poked in the eye — at least not bad enough for him to tell anyone.
Sometimes I think people under-appreciate just how amazing Ferguson’s durability was. Again, this is not a criticism of Becton. Injuries happen in the NFL … unless you’re Ferguson.
