Jerry Rice has a plea for Kyle Shanahan.
The legendary former 49ers receiver reacted to Deebo Samuel’s injury during a win against the Buccaneers on Sunday with a beg to tweak the offensive play-calling.
“Please stop running our skill players up the middle,” Rice wrote on Instagram. “@trey.lance @jimmypolo10 now @19problemz [Samuel] all hurt!!”
Samuel, 26, likely suffered a high-ankle sprain, Shanahan said after the game. Trey Lance suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2, and Jimmy Garoppolo is likely done for the year with a foot injury, though there’s a small chance he could return during the playoffs.
Under Shanahan, the 49ers play an intense, physical style that bruises opponents — and also causes attrition in their own ranks.

Nonetheless, the Niners, now on their third quarterback in Brock Purdy, are atop the NFC West with a 9-4 record. The second-place Seahawks are 7-6.
Rice was one of the best players in NFL history. He played wideout for the Niners from 1985 through 2000. He also played four years after that, mostly for the Raiders, plus 11 games with the Seahawks at the end of his career.

If Rice is emotional, it’s because he’s anointed himself as one of the team’s most passionate fans.
“I’m like their No. 1 cheerleader,” Rice told The Post in 2020. “I love what [coach] Kyle Shanahan and [general manager] John Lynch have done, where they brought that standard back and the players have bought into it. No one is bigger than the team.”
