ALBANY – An afternoon rainstorm blew out the oppressive, humid air and replaced it with cooler and drier conditions as the Giants took the practice field for this evening’s session. And then the Giants turned up the heat.

In full pads for the first time this camp, the defensive line dominated up front, which of course it great news for new defensive coordinator Perry Fewell but not such great news for offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride.

In a spirited team period, Osi Umenyiora started things off by basically rushing untouched at Eli Manning. On the very next play, Umenyiora did what he’s been criticized for not doing often enough, staying home and making a big play to stop Ahmad Bradshaw for a minimal gain.

Next, it was Mathias Kiwanuka’s turn. He stuffed D.J. Ware on one running play and followed that up by pressuring Manning into what would have been a sack. Even Dave Tollefson got into the act, surging in and abusing left tackle prospect Will Beatty for a sack of Manning and then blowing by Beatty and getting into the backfield to drop Andre Brown for a loss of yards. That prompted a frustrated offensive line coach Pat Flaherty to shout “Wakeup!” at Beatty.

Other practice notables:

– For the first time in camp the Giants worked on the two-minute drill and the most interesting development was how they responded on defense. They went with their four defensive end package, with Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiora lining up at defensive end and Mathias Kiwanuka and rookie Jason Pierre-Paul lining up inside at defensive tackle. That unit did some damage. Tuck deflected a Manning pass and Umenyiora sped around David Diehl for a quarterback pressure.

– The two-minute drill ended badly for the offense. On the final play, Manning looked downfield for tight end Kevin Boss but safety Antrel Rolle stepped in front of the pass and came away with an interception that he returned “to the house.”

– TE Travis Beckum and WR Mario Manningham again sat out.

– LB Jonathan Goff plugged the middle to stop Brandon Jacobs in an early run drill.

– WR Derek Hagan had a strong practice with several catches, including a deep route past CB D.J. Johnson on a pass from Rhett Bomar.

– Lawrence Tynes went 7 for 7 on field goals, making him 15 for 15 thus far.

– Manning was able to connect on a flea-flicker, hitting Sinorice Moss.
