The Giants will add a veteran running back to pick up a measure of the workload following the loss of Saquon Barkley for the remainder of the season. Devonta Freeman worked out for the team on Tuesday and is expected to sign once he completes his COVID-19 testing.
The Giants will then have Freeman, Dion Lewis and Wayne Gallman in their diminished running back stable.
But there will be no Barkley. He was officially placed on season-ending injured reserve on Tuesday.
“Obviously it’s unfortunate what happened to him,’’ Burton Burns, the Giants’ running backs coach, said. “I told Saquon if it had to happen to him, he’s built for this type of challenge. Because the challenge for him now has gone from improving as a football player, the technical part he was working on daily, now to getting involved and getting engulfed on his rehab. Knowing this guy’s personality and his work ethic, he’s gonna attack and it’s just gonna be a matter of time. I think you’re gonna see a quick recovery from this guy.’’
Burns said Barkley was “very disappointed, like we all are’’ hearing he needs surgery on his right knee.
“I think he’s such a professional, it’s a hard challenge, but he’s kinda moved on, like ‘OK, what’s next? What do I have to do to get myself ready for next year?’ ’’ Burns said. “We already know he won’t be back until next year so in between, what do we do? So his attitude was very good about that.’’
The Giants are expected to sign former Falcons running back Devonta Freeman to replace Saquon Barkley.Getty ImagesFreeman is already undergoing COVID-19 testing and could be on the practice field Wednesday, meaning he could be available for Sunday’s game against the 49ers. The 28-year-old was a two-time Pro Bowler in his six seasons with the Falcons. He had 656 rushing yards on a career-low 3.6 yards per carry last season.
To replace Barkley on the roster, the Giants signed CB Ryan Lewis off their practice squad. Lewis, 26, has familiarity with head coach Joe Judge (he was on the Patriots practice squad in 2017 and 2018) and defensive coordinator Patrick Graham (with the Dolphins in 2019). Lewis has played in 20 NFL games.
“[He] really competes hard and he has familiarity with the system, having been with Pat last year,’’ defensive backs coach Jerome Henderson said. “He’s a guy who competes and wants to do the right thing, plays hard, I really like the kid.’’
Giants quarterbacks coach Jerry Schuplinski worked in some capacity with Tom Brady for six years with the Patriots. And so, this praise of Daniel Jones is noteworthy:
“This guy is a tireless worker,’’ Schuplinski said. “I would say he works as hard, if not harder, than any young quarterback I’ve been around for sure and close to any quarterback I’ve been around.’’
The Giants will not see the feared 49ers defensive front this weekend, as Nick Bosa and Solomon Thomas are out after tearing ACLs and Dee Ford is out with a back injury. … LB Jermaine Grace was added to the Giants’ practice squad, replacing OL Tyler Haycraft. Grace, 26, has played in 24 games for the Colts, Falcons and Browns.
