The Dolphins were a possible landing spot for the veteran quarterback, who was stuck in limbo with the 49ers coming into the 2022 season.

“Not much came from it, but they were definitely one of the teams in the conversation. It seemed like a good spot,” Garoppolo told reporters on Thursday, before San Francisco takes on Miami. “As an offense, they had tremendous skill players, everything. Mike [McDaniel], being a great coach. It was discussed, but I’m glad the way things worked out.”

Garoppolo has long been at the center of 49ers trade rumors, which only grew louder after the franchise drafted Trey Lance with the No. 3 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft — weeks after Garoppolo led them an NFC Championship appearance.

With Lance poised to take over the starting gig in 2022, Garoppolo kept his distance from the team before ultimately accepting a backup role and a $6.5 million deal for the season. The 49ers openly talked about Garoppolo being on the trade market.

A fractured ankle ended Lance’s season in Week 2, putting Garoppolo back into the starter’s role for the rest of the season. He’s kept things steady, guiding the 49ers to the top of the NFC West at 7-4.

Miami, meanwhile, has balled out with Tua Tagovailoa breaking out in his third NFL season, poised to make the playoffs with an 8-3 mark entering the San Francisco matchup.
