They say lightning doesn’t strike twice, but PointsBet certainly tried.
The internet was sent into a frenzy over a video of NFL legend Drew Brees seemingly being struck by lightning on a set in Venezuela on Friday morning. As concern for the quarterback mounted, Brees and PointsBet posted a second video, letting everyone know it was promotional material for the sportsbook’s “lightning bets.”
“Just wanted to jump on and let you know I’m alive and well, here in Cataumbo, Venezuela, which by the way, is the most active hotspot for lightning the world,” Brees said. “And I’m buzzing — literally, so excited because PointsBet is giving away free lightning bets to customers, all week.”
Drew Brees wasn’t struck by lightning, he revealed in a cringeworthy video. PointsBetPointsBet’s “lightning bets” are live in-game bets that allow users to wager on immediate outcomes such as whether the current drive in a football game will end in a touchdown.
“Anyway, I’ve got to go, I’ve got to get back to set and finish this commercial,” Brees continued, climbing out of an ambulance. “Hopefully, lightning doesn’t strike twice!”
The second video ended with a cartoonish bolt once against striking Brees.
The former Saints star tried to bring some levity to the ill-advised situation on Twitter.
“The lightning must’ve thought I was wearing a Falcons jersey, that’s why it tried to get me,” he wrote. “I’m fine…Who Dat!”
Multiple reporters reached out to Brees in the moments after the first video landed on social media, all confirming that he was indeed OK.
