Drew Lock’s first game with the Giants ended quicker than expected.
In Exhibit A of why NFL coaches are terrified to play quarterbacks in the preseason and leave them subject to injury risk, Lock – who was starting the game in place of Daniel Jones – left Thursday’s game against the Lions in the first quarter after he was hit by Nate Lynn.
Lock got to his feet favoring his left side around the hip before heading to the sideline mid-drive.
He was designated “questionable” to return, but there is no reason to put him back into a preseason game.

Fan favorite Tommy DeVito came off the bench to replace Lock to a cheer from the sparse crowd at Metlife Stadium.
DeVito is a North Jersey native and a cult hero for Italians after leading the Giants to a 3-3 record in his six starts while Jones was injured last season.

There is no real competition to be Jones’ backup, but the unknown severity of Lock’s injury is a wrinkle.
Jones’ extensive injury history – two serious neck injuries in the last three years – is another wrinkle.

If he is cut and subjected to waivers after the preseason, another team could claim him with no recourse for the Giants.
