GLENDALE, Ariz. — It was a two-loss Super Bowl Sunday for the Eagles. Maybe three when all is said and done.

Hours before kickoff, the Eagles learned that their coaching staff for next season likely will not remain intact as the Colts are zeroing in on offensive coordinator Shane Steichen as their next head coach, per reports. Steichen declined to confirm that he is in the negotiation stage with the Colts when asked after the Eagles lost, 38-35, at State Farm Stadium

The Colts reportedly informed last season’s interim head coach Jeff Saturday — one of their all-time great players and a close friend of owner Jim Irsay — that he was out of the running as of Sunday. Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale, who interviewed twice, received the same message a few days ago.

If the Colts hire Steichen, he will be their second straight coach pulled from the position of Eagles offensive coordinator. Frank Reich, who was hired on the heels of helping the Eagles win Super Bowl LII after an agreement with then-Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels fell through, was fired in the middle of last season and now is the Panthers’ head coach.

The Eagles also could be on the verge of losing defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon, who will interview Monday with the Cardinals. The other two finalists in Arizona are Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka and Bengals defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, but neither of them was hired this past week, which suggested a wait to talk with a coach whose team is still playing.

The Cardinals and Colts have the last two remaining head coach vacancies. If Steichen is hired, the Eagles likely would promote quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson, who was sought-after for other offensive coordinator openings around the league.

Chiefs backup quarterback Chad Henne, 37, announced his retirement on social media after the game.

“Calling it a career,” he wrote. “Capping it off with @budlight and another ring!”

Henne, who played big parts in the Chiefs’ AFC Divisional Round victories during the 2020 and 2022 playoffs, nearly had to enter the game Sunday after Patrick Mahomes limped off late in the second quarter. He was loosening up on the sideline but the Eagles ran out the first-half clock and Mahomes returned after the extended halftime.

Super Bowl babies abound. Chiefs guard Nick Allegretti’s wife, Christina, gave birth to healthy twin daughters Sunday morning in Chicago. He and his parents FaceTimed live from the Super Bowl hotel lobby with Christina and her parents, according to NFL Network.. Chiefs receiver Mecole Hardman, who is on injured reserve, was at the hospital with girlfriend Chariah Gordon after her water broke and FaceTimed with Jerick McKinnon during the confetti celebration and FaceTimed with teammate Jerick McKinnon during the confetti celebration.

The 65-yard punt return by Chiefs WR Kadarius Toney was the longest in Super Bowl history. … Jalen Hurts’ 70 rushing yards was the most by a quarterback in a Super Bowl. … Sunday’s game, with Hurts and Patrick Mahomes, featured the youngest combined ages of the starting quarterbacks — 51 years and 337 days.
