Ellis had Pat answer to Jets’ lowball offer

Shaun Ellis will miss his Jets teammates, but he can’t say the same for Mike Tannenbaum or Rex Ryan.

The longtime Gang Green defensive lineman gave his side yesterday of his weekend leap to the arch-rival Patriots, saying Tannenbaum “basically told me I was last on the totem pole” when it came to free agents the Jets general manager wanted to re-sign.

Ellis, an 11-year pro, added in a conference call with New York reporters that he considered Tannenbaum’s initial offer and counter-offer insulting, especially since he claims the Jets repeatedly told him they wanted him to retire in the green and white.

The Jets initially offered Ellis a one-year deal for the veteran-minimum salary of $910,000, according to sources. New England’s Bill Belichick blew that out of the water Sunday, luring Ellis with a deal reportedly worth $4 million for one year plus $1 million in reachable incentives.

Ellis said he gave Tannenbaum the chance to match it without revealing the Patriots’ specific offer, and Ellis described the response in near-comical terms.

“He said, ‘We’ve got a couple thousand [dollars] left, if you want that,’ ” Ellis said.

Tannenbaum declined to address the specifics in a statement released by the Jets last night.

“These are tough decisions,” Tannenbaum said. “Shaun was our longest tenured Jet. I have the greatest amount of respect for him and I will always appreciate his contributions to this team.”

But Tannenbaum wasn’t the only Jets official to get on Ellis’ bad side.

Ryan caused a stir Sunday by saying he didn’t wish Ellis well in New England because he was going to the Jets’ nemesis, prompting Ellis to tell reporters there that he respected the Jets coach but “I guess the feeling isn’t mutual.”

Ryan actually had complimented Ellis before that remark, but Ellis said his response was based on both Ryan’s verbal slap and the Jets’ minimal money offer.

“It all went hand-in-hand,” he said.

Ellis, who will play both end and tackle as the Patriots transition to a 4-3, said it feels weird to be with the Jets’ most hated foe. On the flip side, Tannenbaum’s alleged comments still sting.

“To say I’m bitter? No. Disappointed? Somewhat, I was,” he said. “But I’m in a great situation. I loved my [Jets] teammates, had a great time with them. I’ve just got to start over and build on my success here.”
