Jonathan Vilma’s stay with the Jets is nearly over, and he could be sent packing as soon as tomorrow, when NFL free agency begins and it’s open season on trades.

Vilma tried to sell himself during last week’s NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, and yesterday was in the Detroit area taking a physical, as he’s coming off November reconstructive knee surgery.

Might the Lions be a match? They say they will listen to trade offers for defensive tackle Shaun Rogers, like Vilma a former first-rounder seeking a change in scenery.

Vilma was a rising star before Eric Mangini arrived and tried to fit Vilma into a 3-4 defensive scheme. The Jets have given Vilma permission to shop himself to any team other than the Patriots.
