And the winner is … the Oakland Raiders?

Like “Goodfellas” losing the Oscar for Best Picture to “Dances With Wolves” in 1991, award shows often produce major surprises and inexplicable results that leave viewers scratching their heads.

Here’s the latest: The Raiders were named the winners of the Alpha Award at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference in Boston for “Best Transaction” for last year’s oft-criticized trade of linebacker Khalil Mack and a second-round pick to Chicago for two first-round picks (2019 and 2020) and a third-round selection (2020).

“Everybody else thought it was a terrible trade, but draft picks are very valuable,” Houston Rockets GM Daryl Morey, a member of the voting panel, told The Athletic. “Analytics tends to fly in the face of popular convention pretty often. We don’t care about what people say.”

Morey added that Raiders president Marc Badain believed Morey was pulling his leg when informed of the award, saying: “I had to tell him several times that I wasn’t kidding. I guess they took a lot of heat for that.”

Mack recorded 12.5 sacks in his first season with the Bears, nearly the entire total the entire Raiders team managed — a league-worst 13 — in 2018. Chicago also won the NFC North crown with a 12-4 mark, meaning the Raiders will receive the 24th overall selection in this year’s draft.

Oakland also has the fourth-overall pick in the draft after finishing 4-12 last season under first-year coach Jon Gruden and the 27th selection from its trade of wide receiver Amari Cooper to Dallas in October.
