A toxicology report confirmed that former Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan died of an accidental drug overdose, TMZ reported Friday.

Brennan had fentanyl, methamphetamine, amphetamine and ethanol in his system when he died in May, according to the report.

The 37-year-old had been receiving treatment at a California rehab facility before his death. Brennan’s father, Terry Brennan, had taken him to the hospital two days before the overdose because he said his son had been drinking.

“I could tell he was not well and needed help,” Terry Brennan told the Associated Press in May.

It is unclear if any of the drugs in his system were prescribed. Fentanyl, the powerful opioid, is at the center of the addiction crisis in the country.

Brennan was a sixth-round pick in 2008 by Washington and also played briefly for the Raiders, but he will be remembered as a college cult hero.

A star at Hawaii, Brennan led a pass-happy attack that in 2007 won the WAC title with a 12-0 regular season before losing to Georgia in the Sugar Bowl.
