Former Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez was “acting erratically,” reeked of booze and was slurring his words when he body-slammed an elderly grease truck driver just before he was stabbed in the chest in Indianapolis, according to authorities and local reports.
The 69-year-old driver said he stabbed Sanchez several times in self-defense after the attack, telling cops, “This guy is trying to kill me,” court documents alleged.

The 38-year-old was seen doing “wind sprints” in the alley behind the Indianapolis bar where the incident occurred. WTHRGrim photos show the alleged victim wearing a neck brace and covered in blood, lying bruised and battered in his hospital bed.
“His family says he was cut in the fight and it went through his cheek and hit his tongue,” Fox59 anchor Angela Ganote wrote on social media Sunday.
The former NFL pro stunk of alcohol and was slurring his words when he confronted the grease truck driver, who requires hearing aids, according to the affidavit.

“When PT leaned in, he stated that Mr Sanchez smelled of alcohol and his speech was slurred,” the affidavit continues.

- Sanchez approaches the driver to try to get him to move and eventually gets into an altercation where he body-slams him toward the wall and then to the ground.
- The driver sprayed Sanchez with mace or pepper spray, but the former NFL quarterback continues attacking him.
- The driver pulls a knife and stabs Sanchez two or three times in the chest, believing, “This guy is trying to kill me.”

- Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers respond to a report of a person shot. They locate Sanchez in Loughmiller’s Pub.
- It’s later reported that Sanchez is uncooperative with responding officers. He tells the detective he can only remember “grabbing for a window” and nothing else about the incident.
- Sanchez is rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
- The driver also suffered “significant injuries,” including lacerations to his cheek and jaw, with a cut that allegedly went through his cheek and hit his tongue.
Saturday
- Sanchez undergoes surgery for stab wounds to the chest, and is stable.
- He is arrested at the hospital and charged with misdemeanor counts of battery resulting in injury, public intoxication, and unlawful entry of a motor vehicle.
Sunday
- Sanchez is discharged from the hospital Sunday morning and transferred directly to central booking at Marion County Jail, where he reportedly posts his $300 cash bond.
Monday
- Sanchez’s charges are upgraded from several misdemeanors to a Level 5 felony battery of causing serious injury.
Sanchez, 38, was charged with battery resulting in injury, public intoxication, and unlawful entry of a motor vehicle for his alleged role in the incident in which he was stabbed by the driver, according to authorities.
The retired QB, who spent four seasons at the Jets and is now a Fox Sports analyst, was in town for the Raiders-Colts game Sunday.

“This incident should never have happened,” Marion County prosecutor Ryan Mears said in a statement Sunday.
“What began as a disagreement between a 38-year-old former professional athlete and a 69-year-old man should not have escalated into violence or left anyone seriously injured. As with any case, we will follow the facts and the law wherever they lead.”
Sanchez got into an argument with the grease truck driver shortly after midnight Saturday when he complained that the truck which was parked at a loading dock was blocking a nearby alley, sources told Fox 59.

Video from the neighboring Indianapolis Marriott Downtown hotel shows Sanchez approaching and opening the driver’s door of the truck, speaking to the driver and then walking over to the security office doors of the hotel, according to a probable cause affidavit seen by the Indy Star.
The pair then had another interaction, before Sanchez started following the driver, who was seen backing away, according to footage described in charging docs.
“Sanchez is seen running after [the man] and the video shows Mr Sanchez grabbing and throwing [the man] towards the wall of the Westin,” police wrote in the affidavit.
The fight then continued in the alley between a large dumpster and the truck before Sanchez allegedly threw the elderly delivery driver to the ground, authorities said. A witness who saw the altercation thought the pair were friends until he saw they were recording each other on their cell phones, according to court records.
The grease disposal driver, who was initially incorrectly reported to be a DoorDash delivery driver, told police he used his mace on Sanchez, but the former NFL quarterback kept attacking him.
He said he stabbed Sanchez two or three times, at which point, the former athlete stared at him “with a look of shock,” before turning around and heading off up the alley, according to the affidavit.

Sanchez is yet to be booked into the Marion County Jail, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
He was charged after police reviewed area surveillance video and spoke with the driver of the grease disposal truck, the law enforcement source said.
An initial hearing has not yet been set in the case.
Sanchez was removed from Sunday’s scheduled broadcast crew for the game between the Las Vegas Raiders and the Indianapolis Colts, with the network giving a brief statement on his absence.
“Friday night in Indianapolis, one of our team members, Mark Sanchez, was involved in an incident that we’re still trying to wrap our heads around,” Charissa Thompson said during pregame NFL coverage.
“At this time, our thoughts and prayers are with Mark, his family, and all of those involved.”
