Maybe Ezekiel Elliott can play Sunday against the Giants after all.

There appears to be real progress being made in talks with the Cowboys, with ProFootballTalk reporting the two sides are “close” on a six-year, $90 million extension.

Elliot’s agent, Rocky Arceneaux, told ESPN that the two sides are “very close” on a new deal. The outlet also reported there’s “urgency” to get a deal done within 24 hours — as of about noon Tuesday — to get Elliott on the practice field Wednesday to prepare for Week 1.

Elliott left Cabo en route to Dallas in anticipation of a potential deal. The two-time Pro Bowl running back has been holding out all summer and training in Cabo as he awaits a new contract.

“I think Zeke is showing he’s committed by coming back to Dallas We didn’t come here not to do a deal,” Arceneaux said.

There has been sniping back and forth with owner Jerry Jones saying Elliott could miss several games. His son Stephen has been critical of Arceneaux. Elliott ran for 1,434 yards and six touchdowns a year ago. Rookie fourth-round pick Tony Pollard and veteran Alfred Morris would share carries if Elliott still misses time.

But it looks like the two sides are getting closer to a deal, and just in time for Sunday’s regular season opener against the Giants.

Jerry Jones seemed more positive during his radio show on KRLD-FM on Tuesday, saying he would like to see Elliott play against the Giants on Sunday, though he did admit it may be challenging for that to happen.

“It’s Tuesday. You better be preparing with the people you have available to you. We are preparing with the people we have now.” Jones said. “It would be great if Zeke would be in that group. We will see how today goes, how tomorrow goes, how the ensuing hours pan out. He should be fresh.”
