The catfisher wasn’t a Dolphin.
“Maserati Rick,” who used his alleged NFL-player status to lure women into his life, a prolonged con that managed to dupe a car dealership, too, is better known as Ricardo Agnant. If you haven’t heard of him, that’s the point.
In a Black Sports Online investigation, Agnant was revealed and “Maserati Rick” was debunked as a vile digital personality whose persona was built on an Instagram-filter-enabled lie.
The untangling of the complex web began when Redskins linebacker Lynden Trail polled his Facebook followers on March 16, asking why “Black athletes with money marry white women?” Maserati Rick, whose avatar showed a vague image of a helmet-wearing football player, without any distinguishing features, claimed he was a Miami Dolphin, and the lie wasn’t his most heinous assertion.
Black women “don’t have proper guidance to how they should treat a man, so they mess up a lot in relationships,” Maserati Rick wrote in a lengthy answer that managed to disparage both black and white women, one as unruly and the other as subservient. “…[Y]oung black athletes are looking for a woman to submit do they part, and they handle business. Men needs peace of mind, and you don’t get that with black women.”
There was a lot of anger directed Maserati Rick’s way, but all at an alleged NFL player seemingly without a name. His face could sometimes be seen, typically posing at clubs with white women — black women are not “coachable,” he wrote — women who believed him to be a football player.
In reality, Maserati Rick is Agnant, whose NFL career comprised a regional combine at the Dolphins facility in 2014. He turned no heads, but has since manipulated photos to deceive the internet into believing his celebrity. Using Instagram filters, he went to great lengths to obscure images — “I signed a contract with The Miami Dolphins today” he wrote in one picture, in which the image quality was so skewed, a viewer can’t make out his face. Other times he would take an image of a Dolphins player and crank up the color quality to veil features, giving the impression that he was that player.
He even conned a Florida luxury car dealership, which announced that “Ricardo Agnant of the Miami Dolphins had a great visit” in January.
After he was outed, Maserati Rick disappeared. His Instagram and Facebook were scrubbed, leaving precious few screenshots of a con artist at work.
