The Falcons fired head coach Dan Quinn and general manager Thomas Dimitroff after an 0-5 start to the 2020 NFL season, The Athletic reported Sunday afternoon.

Atlanta, who announced the firings late Sunday night, hasn’t had an 0-5 start since 1997. The Falcons fell to the Carolina Panthers, 23-16, on Sunday and blew a 20-point first-quarter lead to the Cowboys earlier this season.

Quinn has been with the Falcons since 2015, and is 43-42. The Falcons haven’t made the postseason in the past two seasons, going 14-23 since 2018. His most successful season was in 2016, when the Falcons finished first in the NFC South. That year they lost to the Patriots in Super Bowl LI after blowing the largest lead — 25 points — in the game’s history before losing in overtime. Dimitroff has been with the team since 2008.

In 2019, the Falcons went 1-7 to start the season with Quinn serving as head coach and defensive coordinator. There was speculation Quinn would be fired at the end of that season, but he returned after a defensive turnaround sparked a 6-2 finish (7-9 overall) and a second-place finish in the NFC South.

Quinn would become the second head coach fired this season, following Bill O’Brien, who was relieved of coaching GM duties last week.
