If you haven’t yet realized it, Week 5 of the fantasy football season is likely to be make it or break it for everyone. As injuries pile up and teams’ depth is tested, we could see a shift in the competitive balance of your league and get a first-hand look at which teams are contenders and which ones are pretenders.
Heading into Sunday, we are going to have to prepare for a laundry list of receivers who could be out, thus forcing you to rely on your bench or, even worse, the late-week waiver wire.
Two teams hit with notable injuries to their receiving corps are the Bengals and the Bills. Cincinnati could be without Tee Higgins, who has had his practice reps limited over the past few days due to an ankle injury, and Buffalo, already without Jamison Crowder after he broke his left ankle last week, could be without Isaiah McKenzie, who still hasn’t been cleared from the league’s concussion protocol. The “next man up” philosophy immediately turns our attention to Cincinnati’s Tyler Boyd and Buffalo’s rookie upstart, Khalil Shakir.
Cincinnati’s Tyler Boyd could be a great pickup for your fantasy squad. Photo by Dylan Buell/Getty ImagesBoyd is at least a name we know we can trust in. Already this season, the No. 3 wideout on the Bengals has amassed 202 receiving yards with two touchdowns on just 12 receptions. He is averaging fewer than five targets per game, but should Higgins be out or even limited, Boyd’s target share should increase given the soft coverage from Baltimore.
Shakir is a much deeper dive, but should you be struggling for a replacement, there is definite upside with the Bills facing the Steelers. Stefon Diggs and Gabriel Davis command most of Josh Allen’s attention, but Crowder and McKenzie have combined for an average of eight targets per game resulting in 213 yards and two touchdowns. Obviously Shakir won’t see that type of workload, but even just five or six targets in this prolific offense can result in strong totals.
With so many fantasy teams dealing with significant injuries this week, it is important to cover every angle possible. Having a better No. 3 receiver in your lineup could make all the difference this week, and adding a win is crucial. With bye weeks coming up, you need to ensure your team’s depth is at its best.
