One easily could make the argument a bust fantasy draft pick is much more damaging that a sleeper hit. Namely because you pick busts much higher in the draft.
As seems to be the norm, there were plenty of candidates for bust of the year just from the first couple of rounds of most drafts. For our criteria for bust of the year, we compare total fantasy points scored, how they compare to projections and others at that position, and also how often you might have played and been disappointed by that player.
For example, as bad as JuJu Smith-Schuster was this season, we rank Odell Beckham Jr. much worse because JuJu was injured during part of the season and even when healthy likely had been relegated to the bench based on his production. Beckham, routinely drafted in the early second round, kept teasing throughout the season, but never delivering.
That is why Beckham gets the Madman’s infamous Bust of the Year designation.
QB Bust of the Year: Baker Mayfield (Browns) — For a Browns receiver to top the bust list means that receiver’s quarterback must have been pretty poor, too. No injury got in Mayfield’s way, he was just plain bad.
JuJu Smith-SchusterGetty ImagesRB Bust of the Year: David Johnson (Cardinals) — Midseason back and ankle injuries derailed what was on track to be a solid season by the late-first-round pick. Saved from overall bust infamy based on the fact he likely never made it off your bench after being sidelined.
WR Bust of the Year: JuJu Smith-Schuster (Steelers) — Look, a good argument can be made for Antonio Brown, who was a complete waste of a third- or fourth-round pick. But you likely only started Brown once and got a decent return, then jettisoned him from the roster. Smith-Schuster hung around for much longer at a steeper draft cost in second round.
WR Tight End Bust of the Year: O.J. Howard (Buccaneers) — Often the seventh TE taken in drafts, but ranks just 27th in fantasy points at the position, behind even the Cowboys’ Blake Jarwin, who has remained on most waiver wires all season.
DST Bust of the Year: Jaguars — The Jacksonville defense/special teams had an average draft position in the low 100s, often the third DST off the draft board, yet they are 26th in fantasy points scored. They even are a defense to target for big games against now, specifically for RBs.
“Rise of Skywalker” award: Alvin Kamara (RB, Saints) — For the player who couldn’t quite deliver on tons of hype, yet didn’t reach a level of embarrassment.
“They Are Who We Thought They Were” award: Amari Cooper (WR, Cowboys) — Again he proved to be feast or famine. After a hot start the first three weeks, he scored below 10 fantasy points as often as he topped it.
What Were We Thinking?: Damien Wiliams (RB, Chiefs) — Those worried about his durability proved correct. He saw limited action in multiple games and missed three because of a rib injury.
