Halloween may have passed, but there are still plenty of scary stories around the NFL with fantasy football players shaking in their boots.

The high-scoring games we witnessed during Week 8 were fun and exciting, but for those struggling at the running back position, things are going from bad to worse. Not everyone can enjoy a three-touchdown performance as we saw from Alvin Kamara, especially when your running back, who you thought was leading his team’s backfield, is actually now playing second fiddle to another.

Those who drafted D’Andre Swift had high hopes that this would be the year he would break out and leads the Lions in touches, yards, and touchdowns. Unfortunately, he’s not just in a time-share with Jamaal Williams, but he is now nothing more than a third-down, pass-catching back with limited touches. You would like to think it was because the team was handling him with kid gloves following the shoulder injury, but Williams is exactly the type of guy head coach Dan Campbell loves. Williams is not only a hard-nosed runner, but he is also an emotional leader of this team, and there is no way Campbell will let him rot on the bench.

Did you think Brian Robinson was getting ready to emerge as the leader of the Commanders’ backfield? Sorry, but a 3.2 yards per carry average isn’t getting it done. Fantasy players riding the Antonio Gibson train have had their ups and downs. Still, it looks like offensive coordinator Scott Turner has finally learned how to use the hybrid running back/wide receiver.

And what about Darrell Henderson and the Rams backfield? That got even uglier with Ronnie Rivers suddenly emerging. Even Bears running back David Montgomery has lost his hold on the top job in Chicago as Khalil Herbert has pushed his way into a 50/50 split.

The running back position has seemingly taken a turn for the worst from a quality standpoint, but for fantasy, it looks like we have more bodies from which to choose. They may not be seeing full-time carries, but they are getting the work you need to score points in fantasy. Should Williams, Gibson, Herbert or even the Rams’ Ronnie Rivers be sitting on your waiver wire, you might be better off grabbing one or more of them instead of hoarding a fifth or sixth wide receiver. Now that’s scary.
