For the majority of fantasy football leagues, Week 16 brought about the close of the 2019 season. Champions were crowned, losers were consoled and everyone hugged it out in the end.
There are still some who play to Week 17, and though we don’t want to short them on the waiver talk for their championship, let us accept the fact that if you’re still playing right now, you don’t need us to tell you that Seattle running back Travis Homer is your new best friend.
Instead, we would like to take this time around the holidays to show our appreciation for the waiver wire adds who stepped up the most for us. Whether you were streaming quarterbacks or dealt with running back injuries galore, someone saved your fantasy season, and it is important to acknowledge them. How else are we going to get our competition to overvalue them in next year’s drafts?
DeVante ParkerGetty ImagesThere was no better midseason quarterback add than Ryan Tannehill of the Titans. If you were streaming QBs, Tannehill brought you amazing stability. His first official start came in Week 7, when he threw for 312 yards and two touchdowns against the Chargers. From then through Week 16, he averaged 267.7 passing yards with 20 touchdowns and just six interceptions. He also ran in four TDs on his own and ranks as the 21st most-productive quarterback. Not bad for a guy who has started just nine games.
Fewer running back injuries than normal left us scrambling for help during the bye weeks, but fortunately we found our knight in shining armor in Week 12 when San Francisco’s Raheem Mostert took over the starting job. Concerns of a committee were assuaged as Mostert dominated the snaps and carries to bring us six TDs in Weeks 12-16.
Our waiver wire darling at wide receiver comes in the form of former four-year bust DeVante Parker. Who knew all he needed was a little FitzMagic? Undrafted in most 10-12 team leagues, the Miami wideout topped 1,000 yards for the first time in his career with nine touchdowns, matching his total for four previous seasons combined.
No waiver wire All-Star squad would be complete without Raiders tight end Darren Waller. He dominated with 1,000-yard season. He had just three touchdowns, but his yards and receptions totals have him fifth overall at the position.
There’s nothing better than picking up a guy from waivers and watching him crush it each week. Be on the look out for those deep sleepers in 2020. You never know who is going to deliver a championship to your doorstep.
