Osi Umenyiora could be returning to New York … in a Jets uniform.
The longtime Giants defensive end visited Gang Green on Wednesday, according to a source. Umenyiora, 33, spent the past two seasons playing for the Falcons after nine years and two Super Bowls with Big Blue.
The Jets are looking for depth along the defensive line and trying to boost their pass rush. Umenyiora has 85 career sacks, but notched just 2.5 last season in Atlanta — his lowest total since his rookie year.
The Giants selected Umenyiora in the second round of the 2003 draft. He became a regular starter for them in 2005 and had 14.5 sacks that year. He had 13 sacks in 2007 and was a key piece in the Giants’ Super Bowl run.
The Jets have a strong defensive line with Muhammad Wilkerson, Sheldon Richardson and Damon Harrison, but still need some edge rushers. Richardson led the team with eight sacks last year.
New coach Todd Bowles is known for bringing pressure through lots of blitzing. The Jets upgraded their secondary in free agency by signing Darrelle Revis, Antonio Cromartie, Buster Skrine and Marcus Gilchrist. Now, new general manager Mike Maccagnan appears to be ready to add some depth up front.
