John Idzik is on his way back to the NFL.

The former Jets general manager will be hired as a consultant by the Jaguars, according to an ESPN report. Idzik likely will be used to help the Jaguars with the salary cap, his area of expertise.

Idzik spent two years with the Jets and was fired after a 4-12 season in 2014. He previously had been the cap manager for the Seahawks.

The Idzik era with the Jets will be remembered for his lack of spending. He held onto more than $20 million in salary-cap space last year despite a glaring hole at cornerback. It also will be remembered for the public displays calling for his firing ranging from billboards in North Jersey to planes flying over practice carrying banners.

On the plus side, Idzik drafted Sheldon Richardson and signed Eric Decker in his time with the Jets.

Coincidentally, Jaguars GM Dave Caldwell was the Jets’ first choice in January 2013 for the GM opening that eventually went to Idzik. Caldwell turned the Jets down, opting for Jacksonville instead.

Idzik will get a chance to give the Jaguars some information on the Jets’ roster when the two teams play this fall.
