As the Jets get close to training camp, I am going to examine the roster and give you my top 25 players. Each weekday, we will reveal another person on the list, leading right into camp. I am not including rookies on this list because I do not feel it is possible to fully evaluate them before they play a game.

No. 23: Spencer Long

Last year’s ranking: Unranked (not on team)

Position: C

Age: 27

How acquired: Signed as a free agent to a four-year, $27.5 million contract on March 18

Years left on contract: 4

2018 Salary Cap figure: $6.6 million

Looking back at 2017: Long had a frustrating final season with the Redskins. Knee and quad injuries limited him to seven games. He eventually needed season-ending surgery on the quad.

Long played well when he was on the field. He only gave up one sack, two quarterback hits and two quarterback hurries, according to Pro Football Focus.

The former third-round pick out of Nebraska also played guard in Washington.

Outlook for 2018: The Jets made one change to their offensive line, and that was signing Long to replace Wes Johnson. They are counting on that being an upgrade that helps their offense function better this year. Johnson had a rough 2017 season.

The Jets feel as if Long is the perfect player in the middle of their new zone-heavy running scheme under Jeremy Bates and Rick Dennison. The biggest question with Long will be his health. He was limited in the spring as he recovers from the quad injury that ended his last season.

The contract the Jets gave Long looks big on the surface, but if you look closer this is really a one-year, prove-it deal. The only guaranteed money is in this season. So, if Long struggles or cannot stay on the field, the Jets could move on after this season easily.
