Two Giants defensive lineman might not be ready to play in Saturday night’s preseason game in Baltimore. Rookie defensive Jason Pierre-Paul aggravated a groin injury against the Steelers, could not do much in practice on Monday and sat out completely today.

Defensive tackle Chris Canty had no problem at the start of today’s practice but didn’t finish the session, as he also tweaked a groin muscle. Canty referred all injury questions to Tom Coughlin and Pierre-Paul said he didn’t think the injury was anything serious and he hoped to play against the Ravens.

CB Aaron Ross, sidelined with a case of plantar fasciitis in his right foot, went to get a second opinion in Charlotte, N.C. Coughlin said Ross was not feeling any better today and that he’s been fitted for a walking boot. Ross won’t play this weekend.

S Michael Greco, who came up with a knee problem on Monday, was waived. That left only three healthy safeties on the roster, which is why Matt O’Hanlon was signed. O’Hanlon was a recent cut of the Buccaneers. He got out to the field inside the field house after practice started but did some stretching by himself and was able to get more than half the practice in on his first day with his new team.

QB Eli Manning again practiced wearing a baseball cap instead of a helmet. The plan remains to get him in a helmet for tomorrow’s practice, a helmet with extra padding to protect the gash on his forehead that needed 12 stitches to close.

RB D.J. Ware, coming off a concussion suffered against the Steelers, is progressing more quickly than S Sha’reff Rashad, who also came out of the game with a concussion. Neither has been given the go-ahead to resume any activity.

C Shaun O’Hara didn’t practice because he had a flare-up in his ankle.

Coughlin said S Kenny Phillips will get more work in this next game. Phillips was on the field for only seven plays – six official plays, plus one penalty – against the Steelers, his first action since knee surgery 11 months ago. “He should advance,” Coughlin said. “He’s proven in the last couple of days of practice that in addition to coming back and feeling fine, he can take some more reps so maybe that will allow us to give him a few more on the weekend.”

Phillips says he’s ready.

“I feel I can play a full game if they let me,” he said. “That’s what I’ve been working for, I had 11 months to train, I feel I’ll be prepared.”
