Jets Zach Wilson
Bill Kostroun

Well, that bizarre chapter is over for the Jets. Now it’s time to get back to what this 2021 season was all about for this franchise. That’s developing their franchise quarterback, Zach Wilson. We had the Mike White experience for a few weeks and a random Joe Flacco start Sunday. The Jets went 1-3 with Wilson on the shelf. Now it’s time for Wilson to come back and see what he’s made of for the final seven games of the season.

To break down Sunday’s 24-17 loss and look ahead to Wilson’s return coming Sunday in Houston, we bring you a new episode of the “Gang’s All Here” podcast with me and Brian Costello. We have a great conversation with the always candid former Jets special teams coach Mike Westhoff.

Gang’s All Here Podcast with Jake & Coz:

  • JETS STINK: 24-17 loss to Dolphins. Dumb penalties and mistakes killed them, especially John Franklin-Myers’ inexcusable roughing the passer infraction on a third-down stop at the 5-yard line. That was the nail in the coffin. Burning two timeouts in the first nine minutes of the second half can not happen. They had chances to win this game. Jets kickers continue to be bad. Matt Ammendola had a bad day and Robert Saleh probably should have just let him attempt a 56-yard field goal or have team go for it at the Dolphins’ 38-yard line.
  • ZACH WILSON TIME: It’s now time for Wilson to show what he’s got in the final seven games, beginning in a doozy in Houston. The 2-8 Jets at the 2-8 Texans should be a barn burner. Hope is that Wilson can help Elijah Moore and Michael Carter continue to develop and not regress, although Carter will miss a few games.
  • STUMP THE COZ: Intern Cameron out of Syracuse makes his debut on the pod to bring some tougher questions than last week and he stumps Coz on two of the three questions thrown his way.

Mike Westhoff Interview: Former Jets special teams coach (2001-2012)

  • JETS MEMORIES: Team and coaches have changed dramatically since he was there. Had a great time in NY, although the GM tried to make them like the Patriots and failed. Best special teams unit in the NFL with him coaching there.
  • KICKERS: Jets need to invest in doing the work to get the right kicker and have him grown into a good one.
  • NEW BOOK: Wrote a new book about his time in the NFL and turning players you had not heard of into important pieces to a winning football team.
  • NEW COACHES: These young coaches need to learn how to teach players the game the right way to avoid dumb holding penalties and undisciplined penalties that happen too often. It’s a tough job going from a successful coordinator to head coach. Sean Payton coaches an offense better than anyone in the NFL.
