If the Giants truly feared Denver would swoop in on Daniel Jones, it was a false alarm.
After Dave Gettleman & Co. surprised the NFL world by drafting the Duke quarterback at No. 6 overall — to their own fans’ outcry, as many believed he still would have been available when the Giants selected at No. 17 — the Giants GM said he knew “for a fact” two teams would have picked him before that second Big Blue first-round pick was on the clock.
Perhaps not.
Those two teams were the Broncos and Redskins, according to SNY, two teams that did make later selections on quarterbacks, Washington going Dwayne Haskins at 15, Denver opting for Drew Lock in the second round.
And the Broncos have indicated they would not have acted differently if Jones still were on the board.
According to 9News in Denver, Lock was the No. 1 QB on Denver’s board. There was some talk about trading down for the Missouri signal-caller, but no indication they would have jumped at Jones.
The Broncos ended up trading down, flipping their No. 10 overall pick to Pittsburgh and selecting tight end Noah Fant at No. 20.
Perhaps the Broncos are inflating the perceived value of drafting the alleged No. 1 QB on their board in the second round. Or perhaps Gettleman had some poor information.
