Martellus Bennett texts Eli Manning. Not a little. A lot.
“Sometimes I just text him to say, ‘Hey, I am happy to be your teammate,’ ’’ Bennett, the Giants new tight end, said yesterday.
And Eli texts back.
“Thank God,’’ Bennett said. “He usually texts me back something sentimental and powerful. We’ve got a good relationship.’’
Bennett spent the first four years of his NFL career with the Cowboys but did not text Tony Romo nearly as much.
“No, I just got his number my last year on the team,’’ Bennett said. “But Tony is a great guy. But [Jason] Witten is his best friend, so I learned something from that relationship and I’ll try to be this guy’s [Eli] best friend. The tight end should always be the quarterback’s best friend.”
It remains to be seen how Bennett and Manning will get along on the field, but off it they could not be more dissimilar, personality-wise. Bennett is a character, as glib as they come and knows he arrives from Dallas having never fulfilled his own expectations with the Cowboys. Now his first game for the Giants is against his former team.
“I’m super excited to show who I am and the player I’ve always been that I never got a chance to show,’’ Bennett said. “Sometimes the great books are covered up by the bad books, so, you know, somebody finally gets to take this great book off the shelf.’’
Bennett said the politically correct thing about facing his former team.
“You know, this week is not really about me going against the Cowboys,” he said.
But it is clear he has something to prove — to both teams.
“I’m more so just trying to show the Giants what they have,’’ Bennett said. “That part of my book is done, it’s over. That chapter of my book is over and I’ve got new [bleep] to write about. And I’m excited to get to write the new parts of my life.’’
