The Giants have blocked their offensive coordinator Mike Kafka from interviewing for the same position with the Seahawks, according to a report by CBS Sports.

The 36-year-old Kafka, who just finished his second season as offensive coordinator for Giants head coach Brian Daboll, had interviewed for the Seattle head coaching position but the Seahawks instead hired Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald.

Kafka also interviewed for the Tennessee Titans head coaching job, but was beaten out by Brian Callahan.

The Seahawks obviously liked Kafka enough to pursue him as their offensive coordinator.

Since it is not a promotion from the job he has, NFL rules state that teams must be granted permission to interview a coach for a lateral move.

The Giants are already without a defensive coordinator as the team and Wink Martindale parted ways under acrimonious circumstances after the season.

Additionally, special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey was fired the day after the season ended.

It seems clear the Giants don’t want to enter the 2024 season with three new coordinators.

Kafka’s tenure with the Giants has been one of mixed successes and struggles.

There have been reports and speculation that Daboll, whose expertise is on offense, has at times taken over the play-calling from Kafka with the offense struggling.

Under Kafka, the Giants improved from 31st to 15th in scoring offense from 2021 to 2022 and qualified for the playoffs, with quarterback Daniel Jones having an efficient season.

But the Giants took a significant step back this past season, ranking 30th in scoring offense with an average of 15.6 points per game.

Much of that struggle had to do with using three different starting quarterbacks, with Jones lost for the season to a knee injury after six games, then backup Tyrod Taylor was injured and replaced by Tommy DeVito — an undrafted rookie free agent — who started six games.

Kafka, who played quarterback at Northwestern and for the Eagles in the NFL, worked under coach Andy Reid with the Chiefs from 2017-21.

He was the Chiefs’ quarterbacks coach in 2018 when quarterback Patrick Mahomes was named MVP for the first time.
