Birds fly. Fish swim.
The sun rises in the East and sets in the West.
There are irrefutable truths. Here is another: The Giants lose.
And they have had enough of it.
“At this point in time there’s enough of this, ‘Oh we’re so close, we’re doing better, we’re getting there,’ ’’ linebacker Blake Martinez said. “It’s time to win. It’s a results business. We need to go out there and win and need to get the job done. It’s time for that now.’’
The time is overdue. The Giants flipped the script Sunday at AT&T Stadium in that they took a 17-3 lead in the first half and were ahead 34-31 in the fourth quarter. This flirtation with the first victory of the season was coming at the expense of the Cowboys, who lost their franchise quarterback, Dak Prescott, to a gruesome fractured and dislocated right ankle midway through the third quarter.
An avalanche of mistakes, missed opportunities, two touchdowns taken off the board and another Daniel Jones lost fumble kept the Giants winless in Judge’s first season. They were overtaken and beaten 37-34 on Greg Zuerlein’s 34-yard field goal as time expired, an agonizing yet familiar way to spend a weekend.
The Giants fell to the Cowboys today in heartbreaking fashion.Getty Images“That’s all that really matters to us, to be honest with you, is the progress we’re making right now,’’ Judge said. “The record will come in time. Obviously we’re not happy about losses, that’s not what we do here.’’
Well, it is what they do.
The Giants are 0-5 for the first time since 2017 and an NFL-worst 12-41 since the start of that season.
The Cowboys (2-3) are now alone in first place, but will have to move ahead without Prescott. They sit atop the NFL’s worst division, ahead of the Eagles (1-3-1), Washington (1-4) and the winless Giants. The Giants and Washington square off in Week 6 at MetLife Stadium in a battle for last place.
“It’s been a tough start and to say we aren’t disappointed would be a lie,’’ Jones said. “We certainly are. We’re not going to allow ourselves to be discouraged.’’
Tied at 34, the Giants had a chance to finish the deal, getting the ball with 1:56 left, but Jones was pressured on every pass and the Giants had to punt the ball away. The Cowboys had 52 seconds to work with and, on cue, the Giants defense caved in.
Prescott’s replacement, Andy Dalton, took the Cowboys 72 yards in only four plays, getting a brilliant sideline catch by Michael Gallup for 19 yards and then the dagger: A 38-yard lob to Gallup over cornerback Ryan Lewis with three seconds remaining to set up the game-winning kick.
“They just made a big play,’’ Judge said. “He’s a good receiver, Andy made a great pass. We were in a good position defensively and they made a play.’’
The Giants had so many chances to win the game.
Tied at 17 in the second quarter, they should have taken a 24-17 lead when a perfectly called fake punt clicked when Riley Dixon hit Evan Engram for a touchdown. An illegal shift penalty on Cam Fleming took the points off the board. Judge slammed his headset to the ground.
The Cowboys then closed out the half by befuddling the Giants with a gimmick play that resulted in Prescott hauling in his first career touchdown catch on a pass from receiver Cedrick Wilson just 16 seconds before halftime.
Down 24-20, the Giants should have gone ahead on Jones’ 31-yard pass to Darius Slayton, but receiver Damion Ratley was called for offensive interference on a pick play.
Down 31-26 after Graham Gano’s fourth field goal, the Giants got a break when Dalton, fumbled the snap and Martinez recovered on the Dallas 17. The Giants cashed in on Devonta Freeman’s 5-yard TD run. On the two-point conversion, left tackle Andrew Thomas reported as eligible and was wide open in the end zone to collect Jones’ floater to put the Giants up 34-31 with 8:46 remaining.
A face-mask penalty on Markus Golden jump-started a Cowboys drive that ended with Zuerlein’s 40-yard field goal to tie the game at 34 with 1:56 to go.
There was an inkling this might be different. The Giants got Engram’s first NFL rushing touchdown, a 46-yard interception return for a touchdown by linebacker Kyler Fackrell and a 55-yard field goal by Gano to take a 17-3 lead early in the second quarter.
By halftime, the Giants were down 24-20 because of a series of blunders great and small. Yet another Jones fumble — this one triggered when DeMarcus Lawrence obliterated Thomas — turned into a disaster when Anthony Brown returned the turnover 29 yards for a touchdown.
“We scored on defense, we did a lot of good things but we’re not getting no more ‘attaboys,’ ’’ Ryan said. “No more pats on the back for close losses. That time is done. The fan base deserves wins and we’re gonna do what we got to do to get some wins for the fans and ourselves, because we deserve it too. Coach Judge deserves it.’’
