The message this week was delivered with urgency and purpose. If Daniel Jones does not process what is going on around him more quickly, the debilitating turnovers will continue to sink the Giants.
Jones has 16 of them, tied with Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston for the NFL lead in a category no player wants to own. Jones has eight interceptions and eight lost fumbles and speeding up his decision-making will help prevent some of this.
“Well, as we’ve said before, there are a couple of different things,’’ offensive coordinator Mike Shula said. “First of all, we all, as an offense, have to get the ball out faster when we’re throwing the ball. That’s when you’re most susceptible to turning the ball over, is when you’re throwing the ball, whether or not it’s a bad decision or a bad throw as an interception, or getting a sack, strip fumble in the pocket.’’
Shula and the other offensive assistants work with Jones on ball-security drills, hammering home the need to keep two hands on the ball. Jones as a rookie has put on display more good than bad and his one glaring deficiency is keeping the ball from the other team.
Daniel JonesRobert Sabo“When you have turnovers, it kind of, not kind of, it definitely overshadows a lot of the good things that you’re doing,’’ Shula said. “It hurts in trying to win football games.’’
This is the first Giants-Jets game that counts in the standings for 51 of the 53 players on the Giants roster — just Eli Manning and Zak DeOssie have first-hand knowledge of this strange pseudo-rivalry.
“I guess there is some, not saying bad blood, but we both play in the same stadium, we’re both New York teams, New Jersey teams, whatever you want to call it,’’ Saquon Barkley said, though he plans to “ “Some people might see it in that direction, but how I was always taught and how I was always focused on when you’re coming up against games like this, is treat it like [any] another game.’’
CB Sam Beal at last will make his NFL debut. Beal acquired with a third-round supplemental pick in 2018, missed his entire rookie year following shoulder surgery and was on injured reserve this year with a strained hamstring before getting activated this week. Beal has not played in a game since Nov. 24, 2017, when he was at Western Michigan and is expected to be eased in slowly
“He is going to get his hand in the pile,’’ defensive coordinator James Bettcher said. “The guy just has to go compete and try to show us he can earn some snaps.’’
Spencer Pulley started nine games at center last season and all 16 in 2017 for the Chargers. He makes his first start this season with Jon Halapio out with a strained hamstring.
Down two offensive linemen, the Giants signed Evan Brown off their practice squad. Brown made the team last year as an undrafted free agent from SMU but did not appear in any games. He also will serve as the backup center. To make room on the roster, DL Olsen Pierre was waived.
“They’re similar in a lot of ways,’’ coach Pat Shurmur said. “They’re very smart. Part of being a center is, obviously, directing us, and I think Spencer does a really good job in that area. He’s also got probably a little bit more quickness than Pio. Pio probably has a little bit more power.’’
The Giants lead the regular-season series with the Jets 8-5 and are 5-1 when designated as the visiting team, which they are on Sunday.
