MIAMI — Freddie Kitchens is best known, at least recently, as the failed one-and-done head coach of the Browns, fired after going 6-10 this past season. He rose to hold that perch, however temporarily, based on his acumen as an offensive assistant. New Giants coach Joe Judge is tapping into that acumen.

Kitchens is being added to Judge’s staff, The Post confirmed, as the tight ends coach. There is a link here; Kitchens, 45, was the running backs coach at Mississippi State in 2005 when Judge embarked on his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Mississippi State, his alma mater.

Kitchens has a history working with NFL tight ends, serving in that role with the Cardinals from 2007-2012. He was also the tight ends coach for the Cowboys in 2006, but did not work with Jason Garrett, the new Giants offensive coordinator, who joined the coaching staff in Dallas a year later. Kitchens did work with Bill Parcells in Dallas, though, and that is viewed as a positive anywhere around the Giants.

The one season in Cleveland was a failure for Kitchens. He was unable to harness the talent on his roster or control the emotions of his players. Kitchens was also unable to instill discipline into his team and did not make it to a second year.

With Garrett and Kitchens, the 38-year old Judge will have two former NFL head coaches on his staff. Garrett lasted a decade in Dallas and was far more successful than Kitchens.

Judge is also expected to add Derek Dooley to an offensive staff role; Dooley already changed his Twitter profile to reflect that he is working for the Giants.

The connection with Dooley and Judge is through Nick Saban. Judge worked for Saban at Alabama for three seasons. Dooley worked for Saban at LSU and again with the Dolphins. Dooley, 51, is the son of former Georgia coach Vince Dooley. He was the head coach at Louisiana Tech and Tennessee, compiling a record of 32-41 at the two stops. Dooley was most recently the offensive coordinator at Missouri.

The Giants wanted Judge, with no head coaching experience at any level, to put together a staff would help him in his first year on the job. In addition to Garrett and Kitchens at the NFL level and Dooley in college, Bret Bielema – the Giants’ new outside linebackers coach – was a head coach at Wisconsin and Arkansas.
