FRISCO, Texas — Giants linebacker Alec Ogletree was asked Monday after practice about the possibility of Cowboys star running back Ezekiel Elliott ending his contract holdout in time to play in Sunday’s season opener between the teams at AT&T Stadium.

“I hope he does show up,” Ogletree said. “I hope he gets what he wants to get. In order to be the best, you have to play everybody that’s the best, and he’s one of the best in the league.”

File this in the be-careful-what-you-wish-for drawer, because, Zeke is indeed back. And that’s not good news for the Giants.

Early Wednesday morning, Elliott got exactly what he wanted to get — in the form of a six-year, $90 million contract extension with a reported $50 million in guarantees, making him the highest-paid running back in NFL history.

Later in the day, following his first practice of the summer after missing all of training camp, when Elliott was asked if it was “important to be the highest-paid running back in football,’’ he said, “It was.’’

Why?

“Because I believe I’m the best,’’ Elliott answered without hesitation.

Perhaps Giants second-year running back Saquon Barkley will have something to say about that, starting Sunday in Texas. But since joining the Cowboys as the fourth-overall pick in the 2016 draft, Elliott leads the NFL with 4,048 rushing yards — despite missing eight games. The Rams’ Todd Gurley, who before Wednesday morning was the highest-paid running back, is second with 3,441 yards.

So, when Elliott, who learned early Wednesday morning the deal was done, showed up at a 7:30 a.m. breakfast meeting, it felt like Christmas in September for the Cowboys. Spirits were lifted all over their sprawling, state-of-the-art training facility.

“Everybody loves Zeke,’’ Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said. “Zeke’s been a really good player for us. He’s a great teammate. He brings great energy and juice. Everybody was excited to have him back. He jumped in the fold and got back to work.’’

Focus in the Cowboys’ building immediately turned to how much greater their chances of beating the Giants on Sunday had become with their best player back. There also was speculation of how much Elliott would be able to do and to contribute after missing all of training camp and working out in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

Elliott practiced on Wednesday in the 96-degree heat that felt as if you were standing in an oven and said with a smile, “I think I got a little bit of a feel, the heat was a little rough today, but it’s air conditioned in AT&T Stadium.”

Garrett said his first impression of Elliott is that “he’s in very good shape.

“He looks good, but he hasn’t been practicing with pro football players, so we’ll just see how he fits back in,’’ Garrett said. “But he’s a quick study, he’s a smart guy who has an excellent football IQ. We’ll just see how he is and adjust accordingly as we go.’’

What was Garrett’s message to Elliott when he saw him early in the morning?

“Just get back to work,’’ he said.

“I’m just going to keep seeing how I feel the rest of this week,’’ Elliott said. “I’m just going to approach it as a normal week. You still have to be fresh by Sunday. It is a long season. So, don’t want to try to overdo it and risk injury. I feel good. I’m excited to be back on the field. I’m excited to go and win some ballgames.’’

Garrett called the monitoring of Elliott’s workload this week “probably real similar to any player coming back from an injury, [when] you have to use your eyes and the expertise of the trainers and strength staff, and then you have to get [the player’s] feedback. He knows himself better than anyone else.’’

Elliott, who said he felt “isolated’’ working out on his own in Cabo and was desperate to get back with his teammates, flew to the Dallas on Tuesday and arrived to a Beatles-like airport arrival buzz with hopes the deal was close to getting done.

“But honestly, [Tuesday] night, I went to bed in a bad place,’’ Elliott said, thinking the deal wasn’t going to get done. “So, waking up and getting that call and being able to come in this morning and see these guys was special.’’

Not as special as it was for his teammates and coaches.

“Seeing him in the building just brings an energy,’’ center Travis Frederick said. “He looks great. You know he’s been training and he’s been working. It’s not like he’s just been sitting around. I imagine he’s ready.’’

Be careful what you wish for, Giants.
